Reasons in favour of the storage solution

  • Stabilisation of the energy market
The active participation of the storage facility in the markets for primary control power, secondary control power and the short-term markets (day-ahead auction and intraday trading) enables fluctuations in the production of renewable energies to be balanced out.

  • Stabilisation of the electricity grids
By participating in primary control power and secondary control power, large-scale battery storage systems help to keep the frequency in the electricity grid stable and thus secure the supply. By providing reactive power, the storage systems can also help to stabilise the grid voltage. Furthermore, the storage systems are ‘black start capable’ in order to actively help restore the grid in the event of a (partial) grid collapse. Overall, the storage systems therefore play a central role in supporting the critical infrastructure.

  • Curbing electricity prices
In the long term, the expansion of large-scale battery storage systems can help to reduce electricity exchange prices. By participating in the short-term markets, previously unutilised, cheap wind and solar power can be temporarily stored and fed back into the grid at a later date (fewer renewables and higher prices). This can force expensive fossil fuel producers out of the market at peak load times and thus reduce peak electricity prices.

  • Contribution to climate protection
Storage systems are an integral component of the energy transition in terms of the climate protection concept. By stabilising the grids and participating in the short-term markets, more renewable energy can be integrated into the electricity grid and thus actively contribute to reducing CO2 emissions from electricity generation.

  • Contribution to security of supply
The large-scale battery storage facility actively contributes to security of supply and thus increases the attractiveness of Bollingstedt as a business location. By actively maintaining the voltage in the 110 kV grid, the site is of great importance for security of supply.

The current trade tax law does not yet take into account the payment of trade tax locally. ECO STOR has launched a legislative initiative with the involvement of the energy transition associations and the Federal Council for the financial participation of local communities. A binding regulation on the payment of 90% of the business taxes incurred at the plant location is currently being discussed by parliamentary committees and the Federal Ministry of Finance. The initiative aims to create the same right for storage facilities as was created by the legislator in 2021 for wind and PV systems. As a result, the municipalities at the plant location can benefit directly financially in addition to the advantages in terms of security of supply and climate protection.

Criteria

We at ECO STOR GmbH check a variety of criteria to find the best possible location for the large-scale battery storage system. The basis is the immediate proximity to a 110 kV grid connection. However, it is also particularly important to us that the site is far enough away from residential areas to minimise noise pollution and that it is compatible with species and nature conservation.

Location

The large-scale battery storage facility will be built in the municipality of Bollingstedt in the district of Gammelund. The exact location is east of the A7 motorway to the north of the main road.

Eckdaten

  • 212.992 battery cells
  • 512 battery cabinets
  • 64 battery stations
  • 103,5 MW power
  • 238 MWh capacity
  • Twice daily loading and unloading

Environment

We need more wind power and photovoltaics in Germany for more climate protection and the energy transition. However, as they only feed electricity into the grid when there is enough wind or sun, they also pose a challenge for the German electricity system. This can be remedied by battery storage systems, which help to integrate more renewable energies into the German electricity system in a stable manner and thus accelerate the energy transition.

We at ECO STOR also want to make a concrete contribution to protecting the environment during the construction of the battery storage systems. When fencing the facility, for example, we ensure that there is a sufficiently large gap to the ground to allow wild animals to pass through. In addition, we create a habitat for numerous animals by completely planting the site boundaries with native shrubs and trees.
